Squealing or grinding when you brake
Squealing usually means pads are low; grinding means metal on metal — the pad is gone and the disc is being damaged. Grinding needs looking at now, not next week.
Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel
A pulsing pedal at speed usually points to warped or unevenly worn discs rather than pads.
The car pulls to one side under braking
Often a sticking caliper or uneven pad wear — it lengthens stopping distances and wears one side faster.
The pedal feels spongy or travels further
Air or moisture in the brake fluid, or fluid past its best. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which is why it has a service interval at all.

Do I need discs as well as pads?
Not always. Discs have a minimum legal thickness and wear with every stop — if yours are below spec, lipped or scored we'll show you and explain why. If they're fine, we'll say so and fit pads only.
How long do brake pads last?
It depends entirely on driving. Stop-start town runs — typical around here — glaze and wear pads far faster than steady A-road miles, which is why we check them at every service rather than quoting a mileage.
Why does brake fluid need changing?
It's hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air. Wet fluid boils at a lower temperature, which softens the pedal exactly when you're braking hardest. We change it where due as part of a major service.
Is grinding dangerous to drive on?
Yes — treat it as urgent. Grinding means the friction material is finished and steel is wearing on steel, so stopping power drops and the repair grows by the mile. Ring us and we'll fit you in quickly.
