Signs it's due.
The revs rise but the car doesn't pull
Clutch slip — most obvious accelerating uphill or overtaking. It only gets worse, and slipping generates heat that accelerates the wear further.
The biting point is near the top of the pedal
As the friction plate wears, the biting point creeps upward. If it's changed noticeably since you've owned the car, the clutch is telling you something.
Judder when pulling away
Shuddering as you release the pedal can be the clutch face, engine mounts or a worn dual-mass flywheel — worth diagnosing before it's guesswork.
A burning smell after hill starts or towing
That acrid smell is the friction material overheating — a slipping clutch under load.

How long does a clutch replacement take?
Usually a full working day, depending on the vehicle — on some cars the gearbox has to come out to reach it. We'll confirm when you book, and drop-off at 07:30 gives us the best chance of same-day collection.
Is it definitely the clutch, or could it be the gearbox?
They share symptoms, which is why we diagnose before we quote. A test drive and inspection tells us whether it's the clutch, the hydraulics, a mount or the box itself — you only pay for the job that's actually needed.
What's a dual-mass flywheel, and will I need one?
Many modern cars use a two-piece flywheel that absorbs vibration. It wears with the clutch, so we inspect it during replacement — fitting a new clutch against a worn flywheel is a false economy, but we'll only recommend it if yours needs it.
Can I keep driving on a slipping clutch?
Briefly, carefully — but slip creates heat, heat accelerates wear, and a clutch that's slipping today can leave you stranded without warning. Booking it in early usually means a smaller bill, not a bigger one.
