We inspect the full system from manifold to tailpipe, including the catalytic converter and DPF (diesel particulate filter) where fitted. If a section needs replacing, we'll source the right part and fit it properly.

The car is suddenly louder
A blowing sound or roar means gases are escaping before the silencer — a corroded joint, a split flexi or a holed box.
Rattling from underneath
Often a loose heat shield or a corroded mounting bracket rather than the exhaust itself — frequently a quick, cheap fix if caught before it drops.
A sulphur or fume smell in the cabin
Exhaust gases where you can smell them need checking promptly — leaks ahead of the catalytic converter can reach the cabin.
A DPF warning light on a diesel
Diesel particulate filters clog on short runs because they never get hot enough to regenerate. Caught early it can often be cleared; ignored, it becomes a much bigger job.

Do I need a whole new exhaust, or just a section?
Almost always a section. Exhausts are made of parts — downpipe, centre section, back box — and we replace the corroded piece, not the system. We'll show you exactly where it's blowing.
Why do short journeys cause DPF problems?
A DPF cleans itself by burning off soot at sustained temperature — which town driving never reaches. If your diesel rarely sees a long run, the filter fills faster than it empties. A regular A-road run helps; if the light's already on, come in before it escalates.
Will an exhaust leak fail the MOT?
It can — the test covers the system's security, leaks and emissions. A blowing exhaust also usually pushes emissions readings the wrong way, so it's worth fixing before test day rather than after.
The rattle comes and goes — is it worth booking?
Yes, and it's often the cheapest kind of visit. Intermittent rattles are usually a heat shield or bracket working loose; secured early it's minutes on the ramp, dropped on the motorway it's a new component.
