Signs it's due.
Tread approaching the legal limit
The law requires 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference. Grip in the wet falls away well before that number.
Cracks, bulges or cuts in the sidewall
A bulge means the internal structure is damaged — an instant MOT failure and a blowout risk at speed. These can't be repaired.
Vibration at motorway speed
A steering-wheel buzz around 60–70mph usually means a wheel is out of balance — quick to fix and much kinder on the car than living with it.
Wear on one edge only
Inner or outer edge wear is a tracking or suspension symptom. Fit new tyres without correcting it and they'll wear out the same way.

Asked before booking.
What's the legal minimum tread depth?
1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the entire circumference. Push a 20p into the groove — if the outer band of the coin shows, you're at or near the limit and it's time to change.
Do you balance every tyre you fit?
Yes — every fitted tyre is balanced on the machine as standard, and we check pressures across the car before it leaves. Alignment is available at the same visit if the old tyres showed uneven wear.
Can I mix tyre brands?
Legally yes, as long as sizes and ratings match the vehicle. Best practice is matching pairs on the same axle — mixing across an axle can make the car behave inconsistently in the wet.
Should I replace tyres in pairs?
Ideally, on the same axle — two tyres with very different tread depths grip differently, which matters most in the wet. If one tyre is damaged early in its life, a single replacement is fine.
